Above: Scan of the Matarelli Whip Finisher
The Matarelli Whip Finisher is one of the finest fly tying tools ever made. This handy tool is made out of brass and stainless steel and will allow the fly tyer to make very neat and uniform heads by exact placement and spacing of the tying thread. While on the surface, this tool appears very difficult to use, it really a very simple and easy to use tool once you get the hang of it. Lets take a look at how to use this tool.

Begin by holding the tool between your thumb and fore finger. Hook the end
of your thread.

Pull your tying thread up and catch the thread in the notch on the tool.

While maintaining tension on the fly tying thread, rotate the tool to form
a triangle as shown above.

Rotate the tool again around the hook shank until the desired number of
wraps is achieved.
If needed, feed more thread by gently rocking the tool back and forth.

Disengage thread by pulling up on the hook to ease the thread out of the
notch.
Continue to hold the thread with the hooked end.
Remove the hook and pull down on the bobbin to tighten the head. After you
get the hang of it, you should be able to whip a head in a few seconds.
You can whip around eyes or whip anywhere along the shank of the hook with
this tool.
